Indonesian authorities can now sentence paedophiles to be executed or chemically castrated.
This comes after a case of brutal gangrape and murder of a 14-year-old girl named Yuyun from a village called Sumatra. Half of her attackers were sentenced to 10 years in prison. However, this sparked a national outrage as many thought the punishment didn’t fit the crime.
At the time, Indonesian president, Joko Widodo said: “We all mourn the tragic death of Yuyun. We need to catch and severely punish the perpetrators. Women and children must be protected from violence.”
On Wednesday, President Widodo kept his promise to protect women and children from violence by introducing this new government crack down on paedophilia. Judges have now been given the power to sentence paedophiles to death or order that they are chemically castrated. If you’re not familiar with the process, this is a procedure that uses drugs to eliminate sex drive.
